She loved fries. The entire money that carried into her pocket had to be shared between the entry into the Popular Fair, then the Carousel ticket and on the … French fries.
It was a sweet voice like I never heard and nor the salt of the potatoes was enough to change it; of course, that the most exciting for my thirteen years was the walk on the Carousel.
These are some of the memories that I have from the Palácio de Cristal that has been of crystal but is no longer!
The view from the Carousel through the Gardens was magnificent. Later it was exceeded by the view from the dome of the Sports to where we went by a outside staircase.
The Garden of roses still existing retains the romantic flavor but Chico, the Lion and other animals only live in the memory of who have at least the same years like me. Who go there now have a vision of a Vila Nova de Gaia with high and modern buildings, however they will not see the coal barges and “bacalhoeiros” docked at the Douro. It will be also impossible to see the Dolphins on the river.
Today you have the Almeida Garrett Library with its excellent exhibition halls and amphitheater. The old Palácio de Cristal (1865-1951) vanishes on the memories of my childhood but the facts I saw already make me think about the relativity of tastes and truthfulness of those who want to change everything and what is not necessary to be done.
Today the idea of the responsables seem to be making using, if there is imagination, of the Sports Palace, built in 1954, for new city uses. There I saw Hockey, but also circus on three simultaneous tracks, the Holiday on Ice and other events.
This year the Popular Fair as well as the Book Fair took advantage of the magnificent garden.
Now, in autumn, the Garden has the most beautiful leaves of the city and we can walk through this magnificent carpet of leaves, where we can hear our steps through the foliage and at the same time we have the magnificent views of the river to the estuary. This is one of the moment that remain and is the feeling that will last in those who feel this city as an its heritage and not only as an heritage of the humanity.
