From YOURS to Douro
From YOURS to the restaurant “Casa do Pescador” is about 3.5 Km and is well worth going there either for the beautiful tour or for the meal. The opportunity is unique and all those who have come to Porto and neglected this trip, may as well pack up a small luggage and return. This time you might also sleep in YOURS GuestHouse.
The tour starts in Ribeira. Pick your favourite means of transportation (foot, bicycle or tram) and head towards Foz. The ride is diverse, you will pass by the old Customs, where you can find on your right the Miragaia borough (which is the only viewpoint for Douro bearing a different name than Miradouro). A bit further ahead you will find Massarelos, that has been renewed, followed by Arrábida Bridge (after 500m), which is the famous bridge everybody come to see in 1963. Finally you will get to your destination, the Douro District (the last before getting into Foz).
The boat “Menino do Rio” and the restaurant “Casa do Pescador”
In Douro you will need to get the boat “Menino do Rio” that will take you across the Douro River to Afurada – a district of Vila Nova de Gaia. The trip is just fantastic, the crossing will take just over five minutes but it is a journey through time, with an unforgettable view to Porto, the Foz do Douro, Cabedelo and Afurada the oldest fishing village in town that remains active.
The boat stops in Afurada – Vila Nova de Gaia and you will breathe the smell of fresh or grilled fish, tradition and time. This rustic village is genuine, not pretentious in any way. There are several restaurants but we suggest one – Restaurant “Casa do Pescador”. It is a restaurant where you want to eat well, be sure that the fish served is fresh and you will be served by a traditional family of fishermen, and therefore a visit to this traditional restaurant is highly recommended.
The restaurant “Casa do Pescador” has been renovated several times, and bears the taste of time on the walls. The last renovation – the biggest of them all – gave a rustic touch to the place, making it a true icon of the city. The starters are fantastic: mussels, shrimp of the coast, “iscas” of codfish (the fish soup is very tasty) and the dishes are huge. So make sure you don’t over order and be sure to try.
The Return to Porto can be made using “Menino do Rio” Boats with a crew of two old fishermen. Again, you will sail on a boat that lacks security, and trust that it will take you across the Douro just like it has been doing for decades, stopped in time and devoid of modern technology. Say goodbye to Afurada and enjoy the view until you get to Porto. After that, a visit to Foz for the sunset accompanied by an evening drink will not be a bad option.
