Café Piolho – 5 Best Coffee Shops in Porto

Café Piolho is knowed to be the students coffe shop and it’s without a doubt the one that sells more beer in the whole town. Locals, students and Erasmus get together in front of the coffee shop during the week, especially after hours, to hang out and have a nice time. For all those reasons we had to include Café Piolho on our 5 Best Coffee Shops in Porto list.

Although it’s not as glamorous as others, Piolho is the perfect place to have lunch, study during the day between coffees and sandwiches, and to have a drink between friends and unknowns by night.

The original name of Piolho is The Golden Anchor Café, however since it was the nearest coffee place of the universities, students and teachers got together and waited in long lines just to get a table. Since Piolho was always crowded and full of people outside, people started to compare the crowd of people to the crowd of lice that, from time to time, appears on our heads.  So the name stuck and nowadays the whole area is knowned as Piolho or The Lice.

It’s located at Praça Parada Leitão, 45 and it’s opened from Monday to Saturday from 7am until 4am.
