Mercado do Bolhão is decadent or in reconstruction?
Mercado do Bolhão is decadent or in reconstruction?

YOURS restaurant shops in Mercado do Bolhão. Even before YOURS and as a family, we did our fruit and vegetable shopping in Mercado do Bolhão. Why? If you want to buy the freshest products, with higher diversity and a highly personalized service, Mercado do Bolhão is the best place in town. In terms of price, Mercado do Bolhão, is slighty more expensive than the average supermarket, disadvantage largely compensated in terms of quality and variety of the products, facts that in my opinion, make of Bolhão’s vegetables and fruit the best in town. The Mercado has been selling potatoes, onions and vegetables from local producers, mainly from Esposende (a city near Porto) for many years. The best thing is to do is to compare. Imagine you want chives. Why don’t you try what you get in modern supermarkets. There will be able to find one or two options. In Mercado do Bolhao you have many sellers offering a vast range of the same (seasonal) products. However, if you happen to be a regular customer, then on top of what your eyes can see, we can count on the friendly warning of the shopper “this is not for you, today sir!”. And […]

YOURS Brand Identity

The history of YOURS brand identity is quite unique. The project began on a trip to India in 2008, more precisely at Hotel Yogi, a guesthouse in Jodhpur after a simple question –“and what if we did a hostel like this in our hometown, wouldn’t you like that?”. And the idea behind the brand identity sprung in such a unique place that combines harmony of culture, respect and religiousness. To further add special concepts to the aforementioned ones and conciliating our idea of a business and delivery, and we added the following factors: sharing and the satisfaction to prepare something special for others. Finally, we spiced our project with the natural affection and hospitality that characterizes the Portuguese people. The spirit YOURS emerged. The idea was to build a Guesthouse, an atelier (shop) and a kind of a restaurant. Our goal is to personalize each guest holidays as much as possible. We needed a logo that could stamp the three elements by changing a small detail on the brand identity. To materialize our concept we envisioned the design of a trade image that translated this spirit, and thought of the Lotus Flower that symbolizes our principles. We then started to […]

Pilgrimage in Caldeireiros

One of the most prominent icons of devotion of the Vitória’s inhabitants (but not only!) is located on the upper end of Caldeireiros Street. People still venerate the image of  “Senhor da Boa Fortuna” (Lord of Good Fortune), and make an annual festival to the location – Pilgrimage in Caldeireiros (The Lord of Good Fortune) The party is set up at the site of the ancient “Olive grove” which nowadays became the streets of Martires da Liberdade, Trás, Caldeireiros and S. Bento da Vitória. It is at the upper end of  Street of Caldeireiros (Boilermakers), once called Ferraria de Cima, that the big Cross of “Senhor da Boa Fortuna” laid. The Cross probably resided in this location since old and immemorial times, and was located in the middle of the street by the end of the 19th Century, but nowadays is part of the main front of a building. The reader is probably asking: how was a huge cross, made of heavy stone, transferred from the middle of the street to the front façade of a building? Lets try to explain. Since ancient times, devoted people placed granite Crosses in certain streets of Porto. Only in Bonjardim Street there were 14. These were all […]

YOURS don’t understand the horoscope, Café Reimão is a true supermarket of flavours! Apart from now, every weekend (or whenever you want), we can forecast barbecue in a short future… uncommitted… After a good talk about nothing (somewhere 200 hundred years ago we were used a neck massage with a rope to hang ourselves), we’ve decided to peek to Café Reimão. Of course we are interested in gastronomic choices, someone said “we are what we eat” and everybody shows what he/she really is after a good meal! Dives in Douro river and the “kids of the river”

Do you know that on D. Luis Bridge lies one of the oldest traditions of Porto? As in the movie Aniki Bobó from our distinguished  director Manoel de Oliveira the dives on Douro River reflects the adventurous spirit of Porto inhabitants. The dives on Douro´s River are the reason of many stories. The dives lead us to discover an ancestral relationship between the inhabitants of the “Ribeira” and iconic elements that stand out in the urban landscape. The adventure, the risk, the want are transformed into local values, the gastronomy and handicrafts are transformed into heritage. Porto spreads out into his multiple diversity of landscapes, history, customs and traditions that lived through time and gave people its contemporaneity. This outdoor museum relies on his core concept, on the creation of images that are interconnect and complement themselves to the present day.   Maybe because of the film by “Manoel de Oliveira”, dated on 1942, many others authors were sensitized by this heritage custom and there are many histories about it. It makes remember the iconic cover of a musical group much appreciated in Porto streets. Considered one of the most important albums of the career of “GNR”, the cover photograph, […]

Threads and Fabrics

There is nothing better than walking tucked between threads and fabrics on a haberdashery in Porto’ city center, or spend hours on the Internet discover the latest trends from Amy Butler, the Free Spirits or Kokka. I’ve always liked buttons and “fitilhos”, English embroidery, sewing machines and “chitas” from Alcobaça. It  makes remember me to my Grandmother’s house in Redondo – Alentejo. The cool breeze felt indoors on sunny and scorching summer afternoons, the smell so characteristic of the chests opened where linen sheets and the blankets were placed, and a nice lunch in the late afternoon with homemade bread with butter and lemonade! I think the love to “create” come from my maternal grandmother who had some ideas “out of the box” for those times.  After some research, a sewing machine (a gift from my husband) and some “sewing ” experiences  offered with great affection to my friends, the challenge has been launched! What if you have more free time why not do something that makes you truly happy? This was the beginning of Yours Store – Handmade! Incredible India – a trip from Oporto to India

Contextualization: The first urban foundations date the 3500 BC alongside the Hindo Valley, the same river that nowadays separates Pakistan and India. Harappan culture emerges and proceeds the Vedic period that is accompanied by an expansion of the civilization towards southeast. The Holy Scriptures, “the Vedas” were written during the latter period, also responsible for the implementation of the Caste system still in place. The epoch that follows is highly complex. Basically, traces of all empires can be found in what is now known as India: Maurya, Persian, Roman, Greek, Chinese and Macedonians (with Alexander the Great). It was however during the eighth century that society suffered major alterations with the arrival of Arabs and Islam – The Mughal Empire. The most influential period occurred during the kingdom of Akbar, who took a distinct approach to slaughtering Hindu people, allowing the mingling of Islamism with other religions. The subsequent era was dominated by the Marathas, a type of kings that still endures in the territory. All Europeans, including the Portuguese arrived to India with commercial intents, except the English, that decided to conquer the territory. In 1947, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru finally ensured the independency of India, without shooting a single bullet, giving rise to the greatest migration of human history that culminated […]

Pilgrimage of S. João

And the festival of S. João is coming! The Pilgrimage of S. João is a popular saint, like S. António and S. Pedro. He is also known as matchmaker saint. The festival is celebrated in several Portuguese cities, but the city where the celebration is bigger is in Oporto, where 24 June is holiday. Although S. João Baptista is considered by many the “popular saint” of Invicta, the official  saint of Oporto is Nossa Senhora da Vandoma. On the night of June 23, people come to streets to celebrate and we can find a lot of grilled sardines, bread, caldo verde, peppers and wine! The basil is one of the festival symbols, as well as the colorful plastic hammers and garlic flower, used by people to hit (gently) on the heads of others. Hot air balloons made of paper are other attractions that illuminate the skies on the night of St. John. The Sanjoaninas waterfalls, a kind of animated nativity scene, made with sculptures that exemplify the arts, crafts and architecture of Oporto are another feature of the city’s party in honor of S. João. The festival focuses on the historic area of Oporto, with thousands of people walking through […]

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika – God Bless Africa

“TRIBAL TANK” IN AFRICA Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika – God Bless Africa – The oldest specimen of Australopithecus africanus (our closest species), together with many other hominids was found in south Africa (Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site) and dates 2.6 million years, reviving a quote from Nelson Mandela “… we are all Africans”. This makes of South Africa the birth of humankind. Ranked as the 28th world economy, and the 1st of Africa, it is the 25th biggest country in the world and 13 times bigger than Portugal. South Africa is a multicultural country, home to 52 millions of inhabitants and still considered a “rainbow” nation due to the deeply divisive policy of the apartheid. Broadly speaking and using local population statistical data approximately 79% of people are black, 9% are white descendants of Dutch, Germans and English, 3% are Asian, and 9% are “coloured” (the apartheid term for those of mixed descent). Beyond these are smaller but no less significant groups, descendants of Lebanese, Italian, Portuguese, Hungarian, and Greek settlers, as well as the estimated 130,000 strong Jewish community. In an attempt to recognise the cultural diversity of South Africa, the government recognised officially 11 languages, which makes the life of any public […]
