The Palácio de Cristal
The Palácio de Cristal

She loved fries. The entire money that carried into her pocket had to be shared between the entry into the Popular Fair, then the Carousel ticket and on the … French fries. It was a sweet voice like I never heard and nor the salt of the potatoes was enough to change it; of course, that the most exciting for my thirteen years was the walk on the Carousel. These are some of the memories that I have from the Palácio de Cristal that has been of crystal but is no longer! The view from the Carousel through the Gardens was magnificent. Later it was exceeded by the view from the dome of the Sports to where we went by a outside staircase. The Garden of roses  still existing retains the romantic flavor but Chico, the Lion and other animals only live in the memory of who have at least the same years like me. Who go there now have a vision of a Vila Nova de Gaia with high and modern buildings, however they will not see the coal barges and “bacalhoeiros” docked at the Douro. It will be also impossible to see the Dolphins on the river. Today you […]

Cruise on the Douro

There will be many different “Douros” in each memory. For me, the first one remotes to about sixty-five years ago, after driving the train from Caldas de Moledo. The “boat” went to the other side. In the downstream between the rocks, born the thermal waters and rapids showed the wild face of this river. It was difficult to navigate and that was the road to drain the Porto Wine to Porto (Gaia) for over a hundred years. From the River and rising by the slope to the farm we could see the splendor of the mountains to the cliffs of Marão. This summer the river was the place to play in the sand and the splash of the waters that ran fast. Pose for a photograph in a Rabelo boat that the Boatman was riding, it was the image that I keep in my memories. There was another “Douro” seen from the train, during a trip from Porto to Salamanca, in the distant past, it was wild with a wild beauty that we could see in our way to Spain and that we can see between the tunnels and through the iron row that was the work of outstanding engineering. The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Silva

The heart of the historic center of Oporto has surprises and corners that dazzle those who visit and fill with pride the people of Oporto. They make this city feel like a mystery to unravel. Who walks through the emblematic and historical street of Caldeireiros, next to the Torre dos Clérigos, will find a peculiar building. This is almost unnoticed in the middle of the old houses, that nowadays are being recovered. It is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Silva, patron saint of locksmiths, blacksmiths and coppersmiths, very common activities to time and today almost extincts. This chapel has a nineteenth century oratory placed on the facade of the building. The chapel belongs to the Confraternity of Nossa Senhora da Silva from the century XV, who managed for many years the Hospital São João Baptista in the Street of Santa Catarina. The outer shrine is from the XVIII century and for some time had the evocative images of St. João Baptista and St. Baldomero(martyr and patron of Blacksmiths). Currently only has a replica of the statue of Nossa Senhora da Silva. All the altar is protected by a cover in carving which remains almost intact to the passage of […]

Eyes from Sé towards Sé

Eyes from Sé towards Sé | José Henrique da Fonseca Eyes from Sé towards Sé; Click! The sound was almost inaudible but we already knew it, our phone was being tapped. Those were the days of basic technology, and the ability to survey millions was not possible, still our conversation had to be restricted to banalities. However, our wish to discuss governmental censured issues without being overheard, set us in motion in the search of a hidden place. We had to make reunions with 10 or 12 people to prepare a journal that would try to overcome to breach the difficulties of the censure. Someone suggested, and I don’t recall who, meeting in the hall of Se, since the staircases leading to the Cathedral on a hill of the city were quite narrow impeding easy access without being noticed by us. So, we managed to get a good wide space, where the table for the meetings was the floor and in there we would gather and discuss matters for preparing the articles. After experiencing this meeting office, I don’t envy any meeting room of any great periodical journal. Ours had a magnificent view over the houses of Porto. It is the Sé […]

Unique architecture of Porto – The “Ilhas”

Unique architecture of Porto – The “Ilhas” | Filipa Roma Torres | 23 January 2014 “No one knows better than you, wise Kublai, that one should never confuse the city with the discourse that describes it. And yet there is a relationship between them. “Italo Calvino in” Invisible Cities” THE “ILHAS” Typical of Oporto, and an example of unique architectures of Porto – the “Ilhas” as they are known, are the main form of workers’ housing associated with industrialization in the second half of the century XIX. The physical and constructive solution of the “ilhas” is strongly linked to the city’s characteristics and are therefore very different from workers neighborhoods that have emerged in other European cities, and even in other Portuguese cities. The city of Oporto grown for a long time just within the Gothic walls, growing in height, and thus creating a problem of health because of the narrow streets that were characteristic. In the second half of the century XVIII, estimating the continued population growth of the city, appeared plans of Almadas (João Almada e Melo and Francisco Almada and Mendonça) for the extension of the city  for outside the walls, creating wider streets, larger lots, large squares. The Oporto of Nicolau Nasoni

Nicolau Nasoni was born in San Giovanni Valdarno di Sopra, in Tuscany on 2nd June 1691, and arrived to Oporto in 1725. His first and flagship project was the Church of the Clerics Tower, the landmark of the city of Oporto. The project was introduced in 1731 and its construction began in 1732. It is now considered a masterpiece of Baroque in Oporto! However Nicolau Nasoni has a vast work and not only the famous Tower of Clerics. Between 1725 and 1733, he made the painting of the tempera of Oporto Cathedral and most likely made also the main chapel, the sacristy and the church. Also painted the domes of the central nave and side aisles of Lamego Cathedral (1737-1738) and also the Palácio do Freixo in Porto. However, it was as architect that Nasoni was distinguished in 1734, he designed the Church and the infirmary office-tower of the clerics. He also designed fountains such as that one that today integrates the Shrine of Nossa senhora dos Remédios in Lamego and the Angel St. Miguel in the Cathedral of Oporto. Also designed the front of the Church of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos (1743-1748) and rebuilt the Church of Santa Marinha, at the waterfront […]

Celebrations of Tower of Clérigos – 250 years of history

CELEBRATIONS OF TOWER OF CLÉRIGOS – 250 YEARS OF HISTORY Classified as a national monument since 1910, the Tower of Clérigos is a bell tower that is part of the Church of the Clérigos and is in Oporto. 2013 marks the celebration of the Tower of clérigos – 250 years of history. The works made by the Tuscan architect Nicolau Nasoni in the north of Portugal, the church and tower of Clérigos is not the only example of his oldest work documented, but is the one that is most known. Which is due largely to the impact of the monument, their complexity and strangeness of forms, that was unusual to the architecture of the time, particularly in the north of the country. The documentation allows us to track the progress of the work, which started in 1732, in the following year of the approval of the Nasoni plan by the Brotherhood of Clérigos. This Brotherhood, in existence since 1707, with headquarters in the Church of Misericórdia, resulting from the merger of three brotherhoods (ALVES, 1989, p. 122). This year the President was Jerónimo de Távora and Noronha, protector of Nasoni, which have favored the choice of this architect. As responsible […]

Caldeireiros Street

Nowadays the small traditional business is overall in crisis, but there are still activities that persist in Caldeireiros Street, where one can find items not considered profitable by bigger companies. The old shops survive, surrounded by small restaurants, traditional “tascas” and famous “adegas”. (Tascas are equivalent to pub serving simple homemade food and adegas are small, cosy restaurants) as well as small Guesthouses. Guesthouses open in Caldeireiros Street in Porto city center, offering accommodation with very particular characteristics of intimacy and charm, in privileged localization close to charismatic monuments. Examples include the Clerigos Tower, the cadeia da Relação, the bookshop Lello, the Rectory from the University, the churches of Carmelitas and Carmo, the Aliados  Avenuee and many others located within 500 m distance. There is an invitation in the air to wander around their souvenir shops and continue to stroll Caldeireiros getting to Flores street that leads us to Palacio da Bolsa and Ribeira. The nightlife which is particularly crowded at Fridays and Saturdays is already a city touristic reference for young cosmopolitans and is two steps away from Caldeireiros, although quite protected from the noise. If you enter Caldeireiros street by Nicolau Nasoni and start going down, your eyes […]

The Tram ride

This story – The tram ride  – happens at the end of the 50s, in a torridly hot day making desirable a dive in the cold waters of the beaches of Porto. The queue was huge and the tram is already full. Ticket inspector was shouting “can always fit one more, move forward please, ladies and gents”. By then, trams were the most frequently used form of transport in Porto, with scarce number of buses that preceded the trolley buses in operation later on. The tram tracks crossed the city in every direction expanding to the suburbs, being Foz and Matosinhos one of the favourite destinations. Notwithstanding the hollow seats and windows, the trip of about one hour was solely too quick in the circumstances (for the young person I was) of being stuck between cute girls. Foto: Paulo Miguel I remember of finally getting to the beach and browse in search of my friends looking for their cotton beach tents or sun umbrellas since there were no mobile phones. From then onwards the day was filled with good conversation and football until being stopped by disturbed neighbours. Nowadays the trams that connect the historic centre to the beaches are scarce and only […]
